Photomicrograph of a DAPI-stained lens from an E13.5 wild-type mouse embryo. By analyzing Rb/E2F double knock out embryos, the E2F1, E2F2 and E2F3 transcription factors were identified to mediate unscheduled proliferation induced by the loss of Rb in lens fiber cells, neuronal retinal cells and postmitotic neurons of the central nervous system (CNS). However, the ectopic apoptosis induced by loss of Rb in these same tissues, was differentially mediated by specific E2F family members.
